Tesla Accounted for 65% of California Q1 2022 EV Registrations
Despite a number of new BEVs and PHEVs being introduced by other automakers, Tesla continues to dominates EV sales in California accounting for 65.3% of BEV and PHEV registrations in Q1 2022 (January 1 – March 31, 2022), according to analysis by EVAdoption from California Energy Commission (2022) data.
5 Different Models Have Held the #1 EV Registrations Title in California since 2010
Over the 12-year period of 2010-2021, five different BEVs and PHEVs have held the title of being the number one EV in California as ranked by registrations.
How Many EVs Does GM Actually Have in the Pipeline for the US Market?
If you include BrightDrop, GM’s electric delivery van division, GM could have11 BEVs available in 2025. This estimate assumes that both the Bolt EV and EUV will have been discontinued by then and that at least one as of yet unconfirmed new BEVs — an electric Cadillac Escalade — will reach dealers by 2025.
Ford Mustang Mach-E On Pace to Sell 27,000+ Units in First Year
Through November 2021, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has sold 24,791 units in California and should reach 27,000 or more by year end. This would make it the highest selling BEV in the US for 2021, after the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
PHEVs Account for Nearly 37% of EVs Sold to Date in the US
Through April 2021 PHEVs accounted for 36.7% of EVs (BEV and PHEV) sold in the US since January 2011. And in California, the most EV-centric state in the US, PHEVs comprise a slightly higher percentage of EV registrations to date at 38.3%.
Electric Vehicles Expected to Be Available the Rest of 2021
Between now and the end of 2021, 16 new EVs (12 BEV and 4 PHEV) are expected to be available at dealers or that deliveries to customers will begin.
Nearly 16,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E BEVs Sold From January-July 2021
Since reaching US Ford dealers in earnest beginning in February 2021, the Mustang Mach-E has seen strong sales for a brand new EV that isn’t from Tesla. YTD, the Mach-E has sold 15,829 units and has averaged monthly sales of 2,261. Looking at just February through July and the monthly average rises to 2,599.
Toyota’s US Hybrid Vehicle Sales Could Account for 23% of Total Sales in 2021
While we wait for the Toyota bZ4X BEV in 2022 and fingers crossed for more RAV4 Prime PHEVs being sent to the US, Toyota USA is crushing it with sales of its regular hybrids. Tesla Models Accounted for 41.5% Of California EV Sales: 2008-2020
With its popular selling four BEVs, Fremont, CA-based Tesla accounted for 41.5% of EV registrations from 2008 through the end of 2020, according to data from the California DMV.
Ford Mustang Mach-E on Pace for ~32,000 in 2021 US Sales
After 5 months of US sales numbers, it appears that Ford’s Mustang Mach-E BEV could be on pace for around ~32,000 or more in 2021, its first full year of availability.

Mean and Median EPA Range for BEVs Available in the US 2013-2020
Range continues to be a key concern for buyers of electric vehicles, but we are steadily making our way toward 300 miles of mean and median range for BEVs available in the US. In the chart below you can see the average BEV range has ticked up consistently since 2013 to about 250 miles of range by the end of 2020.
Number of EV Models Available in the US to Triple By 2025
EVAdoption tracking of future expected models suggests that the number of EVs (BEV and PHEV) available in the US should triple by 2025 to approximately 165 models from the 55 available in 2020.
Cost Differential Across the Kia Niro Powertrains
The Kia Niro is available in 3 variations: regular hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and BEV. The BEV version is $14,500 more than the hybrid version – a difference that can’t really be justified or the difference made up with various incentives. The PHEV version, however, qualifies for the federal EV tax credit at $4,543 and depending on where you live it could qualify for additional state and local utility incentives that would put the net cost of the PHEV a few thousand dollars below the regular hybrid.
