California Is Only State With BEV Sales Share Higher Than Regular Hybrid Sales Share
During Q1 2022, California had a battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales share of 15.78%, 4.53 percentage points higher than the state’s regular hybrid sales share of 11.25%.
1H 2022 Toyota Prius Prime Sales Decline 72%
Sales of the Toyota Prius hybrid and Prius Prime PHEV declined 47.9% in the first half of 2022 versus the same period in 2021. The Prius Prime PHEV declined a whopping 71.6%, while the Prius hybrid declined 25.3% in 1H 2022. The Prius Prime saw sales decline to 5,353 in 1H 2022 from 18,862 in the 1H 2021.
48% of 1H 2022 Toyota RAV4 Sales Were Hybrid and PHEV
The RAV4 SUV, which has been the 4th-best selling vehicle in America for several years, saw the regular hybrid version account for 42% of RAV4 sales in the 1H of 2022. And if you include the RAV4 Prime PHEV numbers, you get to 48% of RAV4 sales having a battery in the vehicle.
US PHEV Sales Now Account For Only 21% of EV Sales
For the period 2011 through Q1 2022, PHEVs accounted for 33.7% of total cumulative EV sales in the US. In Q1 2022, however, PHEV sales accounted for only 21.4% of EV sales.
Ford Motor Co. Expected To Surpass 200K in EV Sales in Q3 2022
Toyota Motor Corp. reached the 200,000 electric vehicles sold in the US in Q2 2022, and next up as we’ve long forecasted is Ford Motor Co. Ford only needs to sell roughly 11,500 EVs in Q3 to reach the federal EV tax credit phaseout threshold.
US Q2 EV Sales (OEM Reported) Increased 43% Over Q1
US sales of the 29 EV models for which OEMs reported sales publicly had a combined 45% increase in Q2 over Q1. Sixteen BEVs and PHEVs had positive growth in Q2, while 10 models saw declines in Q2, although three of those models have been discontinued.

70% Of Electrify America’s US DC Fast Chargers Are 150 kW
Across the 2,193 Electrify America “corridor/market” DC fast chargers located throughout the US (but excluding California sites), 1,527 or 69.6% of the total at the end of 2021 were 150 kW chargers, according to analysis of the April 30, 2022 Electrify America 2021 Report to the US EPA by EVAdoption.
Tesla Accounted for 65% of California Q1 2022 EV Registrations
Despite a number of new BEVs and PHEVs being introduced by other automakers, Tesla continues to dominates EV sales in California accounting for 65.3% of BEV and PHEV registrations in Q1 2022 (January 1 – March 31, 2022), according to analysis by EVAdoption from California Energy Commission (2022) data.
BEV Batteries Average 83 kWh Versus 15 kWh For PHEVs
Across the BEVs currently available (or that will be in the next few months) in the US, they average (mean) 82.8 kWh and the median battery size is 78 kWh. For PHEVs, the mean battery size is 14.9 kWh and median is 14 kWh and mean range is 28.4 miles (EPA) of range versus 285.4 miles of range for BEVs.

The average EPA electric range of the 37 PHEVs currently available in the US is now 28.4 miles while the median is 26 miles.
