Toyota US Electrified Vehicle Sales Declined 9.2% YoY
Toyota’s US sales of electrified vehicles declined 9.2% in Q1 2023 versus Q1 2022. With a decline of 12%, sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrids had the largest decline among the companies electrified powertrains.
California Is Only State With BEV Sales Share Higher Than Regular Hybrid Sales Share
During Q1 2022, California had a battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales share of 15.78%, 4.53 percentage points higher than the state’s regular hybrid sales share of 11.25%.
1H 2022 Toyota Prius Prime Sales Decline 72%
Sales of the Toyota Prius hybrid and Prius Prime PHEV declined 47.9% in the first half of 2022 versus the same period in 2021. The Prius Prime PHEV declined a whopping 71.6%, while the Prius hybrid declined 25.3% in 1H 2022. The Prius Prime saw sales decline to 5,353 in 1H 2022 from 18,862 in the 1H 2021.
48% of 1H 2022 Toyota RAV4 Sales Were Hybrid and PHEV
The RAV4 SUV, which has been the 4th-best selling vehicle in America for several years, saw the regular hybrid version account for 42% of RAV4 sales in the 1H of 2022. And if you include the RAV4 Prime PHEV numbers, you get to 48% of RAV4 sales having a battery in the vehicle.

Toyota’s US Hybrid Vehicle Sales Could Account for 23% of Total Sales in 2021
While we wait for the Toyota bZ4X BEV in 2022 and fingers crossed for more RAV4 Prime PHEVs being sent to the US, Toyota USA is crushing it with sales of its regular hybrids. Our current EVAdoption forecast has regular hybrids accounting for ~23.3% of 2021 sales (Toyota brand only, not including Lexus.)
Ups and Downs of Regular Hybrid Sales in the US
Hybrid sales then declined or remained relatively flat until they took another jump of 16.8% to nearly 401,000 in 2019. And then, even in a year of declining auto sales overall of -14% due to the pandemic, hybrid sales actually increased 15%. Hybrids are clearly back on the rise, driven by a strong push from Toyota and Honda and the huge success of the Toyota RAV4 hybrid.

Through 2020, the US cumulative vehicle in operation stock is well less than 3% for the combined vehicle powertrains of hybrids, BEVs, PHEVs, and FCEVs.
