Toyota US Electrified Vehicle Sales Declined 9.2% YoY

Toyota’s US sales of electrified vehicles declined 9.2% in Q1 2023 versus Q1 2022. With a decline of 12%, sales of Toyota and Lexus hybrids had the largest decline among the company’s electrified powertrains.

The only powertrain segment that saw an increase were BEVs, increasing to 1,883 units from zero. Toyota launched the bZ4X in Q2 2022, though it suffered a recall and halting of production later in 2022, and the Lexus RZ BEV in Q1 of 2023.

As a percentage of total US Toyota and Lexus sales, electrified vehicles were basically flat at 25.9% in Q1 2023 versus 26% in Q1 2022. PHEV sales as a percentage of total sales were flat at 1.6%, while regular hybrid sales dropped nearly 1 percentage point to 23.2% from 24.1%.

As reported by Green Car Reports, Toyota has announced big plans for its fleet of electrified models, including producing long-range PHEVs with up to nearly 125 miles of electric range. Toyota’s RAV4 Prime currently has an EPA range of 42 miles and the newly redesigned Prius Prime reaches a maximum of 44 miles.
