36.5% of 2021 US Toyota RAV4 Sales Were Hybrids and PHEVs

The Toyota RAV4 saw 36.5% of its US sales in 2021 from either the regular hybrid or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) Prime versions. With the RAV4 ranking as the 4th-best-selling vehicle in the US since 2017, this sales percentage of “electrified” versions is a significant trend and milestone.

The RAV4 Prime PHEV version had it first sales (7 units) in July 2020 and 3,200 for that year. If we use the 5-month period of August-December 2020, the Prime had a monthly average of 640 units. For the full-year 2021, the monthly average increased 3.6 times the 2020 monthly average to 2,309. For 2H of 2021 the Prime had sales of 18,040 for a monthly average of 3,007 during that 6-month period. Because Stellantis will not publicly report sales of its Jeep Wrangler 4xe model, it is unclear of the RAV4 Prime was the number 1- or number 2-selling PHEV in the US for 2021.

On a percentage basis, the Prime PHEV accounted for 0.7% of RAV4 US sales in 2020 and 6.8% in 2021. If we estimate a monthly average of 3,200 in 2022, the RAV4 Prime would reach 38,400 sales for the year. And while total sales for the RAV4 are had to predict for 2022, if we use 425,000 as an estimate then the Prime would account for 9% of total RAV 4 sales and the hybrid version perhaps ~33%.
