Tesla Accounted for 65% of California Q1 2022 EV Registrations

Despite a number of new BEVs and PHEVs being introduced by other automakers, Tesla continues to dominates EV sales in California accounting for 65.3% of BEV and PHEV registrations in Q1 2022 (January 1 – March 31, 2022), according to analysis by EVAdoption from California Energy Commission (2022) data.

New Jersey Has The Highest Ratio of EVs to Charger Ports

The state of New Jersey, which as as of September 31, 2021 had the 6th most cumulative EVs in the US, had the highest ratio of EVs to charger ports at 41.3 to 1. In a distant second place, California with 930,811 cumulative EVs, had a ratio of 27.2 to 1 charger port.

PHEVs Account for Nearly 37% of EVs Sold to Date in the US

Through April 2021 PHEVs accounted for 36.7% of EVs (BEV and PHEV) sold in the US since January 2011. And in California, the most EV-centric state in the US, PHEVs comprise a slightly higher percentage of EV registrations to date at 38.3%.

Nearly 16,000 Ford Mustang Mach-E BEVs Sold From January-July 2021

Since reaching US Ford dealers in earnest beginning in February 2021, the Mustang Mach-E has seen strong sales for a brand new EV that isn’t from Tesla. YTD, the Mach-E has sold 15,829 units and has averaged monthly sales of 2,261. Looking at just February through July and the monthly average rises to 2,599.

US Reaches Milestone of 2 Million EVs Sold

Based on EVAdoption estimates, it is likely that in late July (or if not then, by early August) 2021, the US passed the 2 million cumulative electric vehicles sold milestone.
