Tesla Accounted for 65% of California Q1 2022 EV Registrations

Despite a number of new BEVs and PHEVs being introduced by other automakers, Tesla continues to dominates EV sales in California accounting for 65.3% of BEV and PHEV registrations in Q1 2022 (January 1 – March 31, 2022), according to analysis by EVAdoption from California Energy Commission (2022) data.

More impressive than the 65% share of total EV sales is that two Tesla models, the Model 3 and Model Y combined to account for 59% of total California EV registrations during the quarter. And 12 out of 81 EVs that had new vehicle registrations during the quarter accounted for 80% of registrations.

While the Hyundai IONIQ 5 came close at 1,959, no non-Tesla EV had registrations of 2,000 or more in the quarter. Nine non-Tesla EVs had registrations of at least 1,000.

From a brand comparison perspective, after Tesla five brands each accounted for between 3% to under 4% of EV registrations and another eight were between 1% to less than 3%. Interestingly, PHEV registrations accounted for all of or a significant percentage of several of these top brands EV registrations, including BMW, Toyota, Volvo, and Jeep.

When only looking at BEV registrations, Tesla was even more dominating in Q1 as the now Austin-based company’s models accounted for 78.3% of new BEVs registered.
