Parking Lots and Airports Have the Most Level 1 Public EV Chargers in the US

While there are only a tiny number of public Level 1 (120 volt) chargers in the US, unsurprisingly and perhaps encouragingly, parking lots and airports are the two property types with the most Level 1 chargers, according to EVAdoption analysis of Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) data.

As of December 31, 2021, there were only 1,180 public Level 1 chargers listed in the AFDC database, however, a combined 552 (47%) are located at 291 (25%) pay garages/parking lots and 261 (22%) airports. The fact that these two property types would have the vast majority of Level 1 (120 Volt) public chargers makes sense due to their long parking dwell times.

Travelers parking at airports will often have their car parked from one to several days, which makes Level 1 ideal to replenish the range (and more) and EV drivers used to reach the airport. And while parking lots can be used for very short periods, EVs may also often by plugged in all-day and can add +/-50 miles of range which is more than enough to replenish PHEVs or get BEV drivers enough range to reach their next destination.

Perhaps the only surprise and head scratcher among the top property types is convenience stores and gas stations, which make little to no sense for Level 1 chargers. There were also zero Level 1 chargers listed among multi-family properties — an ideal Level 1 use case — however this is simply because most chargers at apartment complexes are going to be private and only available to tenants.
