5 Different Models Have Held the #1 EV Registrations Title in California since 2010

Over the 12-year period of 2010-2021, five different BEVs and PHEVs have held the title of being the number one EV in California as ranked by registrations.

The EVs are:

  • Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (2010, 2012, 2014) — PHEV
  • Nissan LEAF (2011) — BEV
  • Tesla Model S (2013, 2015) — BEV
  • Chevrolet Volt (2016, 2017) — PHEV
  • Tesla Model 3 (2018-2021) — BEV

Across the 12 years, BEV models held the number one registrations title 7 years, with PHEVs capturing the top spot in 5 years. Tesla was the only automaker to have two different models in the top spot, with the Model S and Model 3 accounting for a combined 6 years. The Tesla Model Y was the number-two selling EV in California in 2021 with 61,022 registrations and could become the top seller in 2022.
