EV Sales Share By State

I’ve updated some of my personal favorite and most popular charts – those that show the wide differences in EV sales share across the US states. The latest data now available from the Advanced Technology Vehicle Sales Dashboard is through September 2020. In these new charts I show the sales share for the period of January 2019 through September 2020.

In the chart above it conveys what we already know about US EV sales even more obvious, which is that the majority of the sales continues to be from states in the West and Northeast.

Looking at all 50 states plus the District of Columbia in the above chart you can see that 23 states remain on the sidelines with a sales share of 0.99% or less. The somewhat good news, however, is that there are now 13 states with at least 2% sales share.

When comparing California EV sales as a percent of US sales for the period of 2010 through 2020 you can see that the Golden State was at its lowest share of US EV sales since 2012. This is a mixed blessing as it is not a great sign when one state so dominates EV sales, but on the other hand, EV sales in California have increased very little in the last few years.
